Driving supply chain and supplier diversity within the clean energy value chain through a panel of conscious sustainability advocates and a database of clean energy professionals.
DiCE is building an ecosystem of clean energy providers in solar, wind, nuclear, biomass, biogas, hydroelectric, and electric vehicle infrastructure.
The Diversity in Clean Energy (DiCE) initiative is an action-based coalition, convened by Duke Energy, alongside corporations such as Kroger, Microsoft and T-Mobile, and representatives of diverse-owned businesses operating within the clean energy industry. This is a unique collaboration between utilities, corporations, and diverse-owned business within the clean energy industry. Each member brings their individual experiences and perspectives to the conversation and collectively we listen, develop empathy, and bring forth innovative opportunities to address the need for inclusivity within the clean energy industry.
The DiCE coalition advocates, drives visibility and opens doors of opportunity for diverse-owned businesses within the clean energy industry through various proactive networking, collaboration, and commercial engagement activities. We aim to amplify the voices of diverse-owned businesses using our collective associations, advocacy and good will.
At the center of the DiCE initiative is a no cost competitive platform comprised of diverse-owned businesses operating with the clean energy industry (plans to go public in Q3 2022).
The DiCE platform will be part of a broader ecosystem of educational, financial, and technical resources tailored to support diverse-owned businesses operating with the clean energy industry such as renewable energy development, installation and maintenance support, research and emerging technology, nuclear energy maintenance, electric vehicle transportation, Black and Indigenous farmers and landowners, legal and contract support, and consultants within the clean energy industry.
The purpose of the DiCE coalition is to drive towards more diverse, inclusive and equitable practices in the sourcing, supply chain and supplier selections across the clean energy value chain of participating members.
DiCE’s goals, objectives and value proposition are centered around driving visibility, inclusion and creditability of diverse- owned businesses through changing the status quo, streamlining corporate processes to include diverse-owned businesses, identifying and collaborating with them (on a national, unified scale), and moving towards innovative, sustainable projects which benefit diverse-owned businesses and communities.
Introducing DiCE’s visionary outcome to “advocate, utilize, drive visibility and open doors of opportunity for diverse-owned businesses in clean energy through collaboration.”
Introducing DiCE’s visionary outcome to “advocate, utilize, drive visibility and open doors of opportunity for diverse suppliers in clean energy through collaboration.”
Diverse-owned businesses offer the most relevant and pertinent perspective when it comes to the reality of contracting (or lack thereof) with corporations and utilities.
Working collectively with strategic accounts, supplier diversity and renewable energy teams will foster alignment and drive synergies between Duke Energy and strategic accounts that bring mutual beneficial value, partnerships and exchange.
Partnering with diverse-owned businesses to benefit community appeals to stakeholders, investors, customers, and the community by sending a direct, customer-centric message to minority customers and the overall community.
DiCE will collectively advance ESG and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals which will enhance community, D & I initiatives and our collective quest for a cleaner, greener, more equitable planet.
Keep up to date with DiCE’s latest news, features, podcasts and events. Look to DiCE for the latest in diversity in clean energy.

Van L. Vincent is a climate change visionary and urban developer who collaborates with community and elected leaders, housing portfolio owners, utilities, educational institutions, and purchasers of renewable energy credits to bring resilience and economic benefit to low-income communities. He believes that corrective climate action and wealth creation go hand in hand and is essential to our health and well-being.
As President & CEO of VLV Development, a certified MBE, veteran-owned firm, Van leads efforts to deliver impactful renewable energy, sustainable housing, and clean energy projects in urban centers. Embracing the idea that clean energy, climate security and economic development are intertwined, in 2009 he founded VGI Energy Solutions, LLC, a full-service clean energy and energy efficiency company, to create opportunities to invest in renewable energy projects in disenfranchised communities.
Under his leadership, VLV financed and, in 2020, completed construction of the 1.1MW-AC PV Solar component for the Bronzeville Community Microgrid, a pilot of the nation’s first utility-operated microgrid clusters, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy, the Chicago Housing Authority, Illinois Institute of Technology and the local utility. The project is the cornerstone of VLV’s vision to develop a series of microgrids by creating 50MW of solar-plus-storage for critical facilities, affordable housing and commercial development, placing one microgrid in each of Chicago’s 50 wards.
A free-thinker and innovative disrupter, Van’s experience in the public and private sectors has helped him bridge gaps, educate the public, drive development and foster partnerships. He previously led the affordable housing practice for the Chicago office of Virchow-Krause LLP, (now Baker Tilly) and spearheaded the development of affordable housing post-Hurricane Katrina in the Mississippi Delta and the Gulf Coast.
He also played a key role in restructuring and transforming the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development’s Project-Based Section 8 portfolio while serving in HUD’s Office of Affordable Housing Preservation. There, he managed a portfolio in excess of $150 million across 16 states, while overseeing government contractors commissioned to deliver services on behalf of the department.
